Acona Methodist Church

The church was built on three acres of land purchased in 1874 from Mrs. A.T. Landfair for $25. Lumber for the building was shipped by rail from Tennessee to Vaiden, then hauled to Acona by wagon. The church was erected by John Hamilton. The Building Committee included Jordan Bailey, John Hamilton and J.S. Herbert. By 1875, the church bad 86 members, and the building was jointly owned and used by the church and the Grange. Early church officials included: Pastor K.A. Jones; Trustees: D.T. Johnson, B.H. McGee, and J.M. Johnson; Stewards: J.M. Johnson, P.M. Diggs, and J.S. Herbert. John William Bailey was Superintendent of the Sunday School for thirty five years. The first bible teacher was Rev. Thomas Newell and President of the Woman's Society was Miss Mary Jane McGee. . This historical marker is in Acona near Lexington in Holmes County Mississippi
