Big Bear Valley Historical Museum. The stamp mill was an early machine used to crush gold bearing ore. Many miners were employed at the large scale mines and Big Bear was one of the many mining towns. Gold Mountain and Rose mines were the largest, having 40 stamps each on their mills. This stamp mill came from the Golden Key mine, 5 miles north of Mariposa. This is the only working stamp mill in Southern California. .
