24 Pounder from the USS Independence

The Independence was built during the War of 18 12 for service against Great Britain. She was the first ship-of-the-line, or vessel with 3 gun decks, in the United States Navy. In 1846 she came to the Pacific and participated in the capture of Guaymas and Mazatlan during the Mexican War. The Independence was the first vessel to make use of the floating drydock at Mare Island, and for 55 years was a familiar sight in Mare Island Channel as the receiving ship of the station. . This historical marker is in Vallejo in Solano County California
