Acme Hardware Building: Historic Renovation Award 2006

Historic Renovation Award 2006. The Acme Hardware Building, constructed by Marshall Bessonette in 1947, was financed by William “Heine” Fluhrer. Acme Hardware first occupied the building. The building had direct access to freight rail cars through a side door and truck ramp into the basement. The Police Athletic League started a gym on the 2nd floor in 1957. In 1960, Acme Hardware relocated, and Pittsburgh Plate Glass and Paint moved into the building. The Medford Beauty School occupied the Sixth Street storefront until the late 1980’s.

In cooperation with the Medford Urban Renewal Agency, owner Laz Ayala undertook interior remodeling, the creation of upper story living quarters and exterior renovation. The new Acme sign is strikingly similar to the building’s historic Art Deco sign. The building is typical of post-war, utilitarian architecture in Medford’s downtown.

For the historically sensitive renovation of a significant asset to the Downtown Historic District, the Medford Historic Commission awards this plaque to owner Laz Ayala. . This historical marker was erected in 2006 by Medford Historic Commission. It is in Medford in Jackson County Oregon
