The Northeast Waterfront Historic District includes commercial warehouse buildings from nearly every decade of San Francisco's significant maritime history. Buildings within the District range from early clipper ship warehouses dating to the 1850s to maritime facilities from World War II. Gold Rush era clipper ships and paddlewheel steamers docked alongside the wharves to unload their cargo, much of which was transported to local warehouses.

901 Battery Street was constructed in 1923 for the Petri Cigar Company. Amadeo Petri established the company in the early 1890s and it became prominent enough to be an official exhibitor at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915. Business continued to boom for the Petri Cigar Company in the 1920s and soon it became the third largest producer of dry Toscani cigars in the United States. After Prohibition ended in 1933, the building at 901 Battery Street also housed the Petri Wine Company.

Following Petri's relocation to the South of Market area in 1948, the building served as the headquarters for Manning's, Inc., which operated restaurants, cafeterias, and bakeries throughout the American West. This reinforced concrete office building at 901 Battery Street is designated as a contributing structure to the Northeast Waterfront Historic District. .
