425 North Los Angeles Street

The actual date of construction is unknown, but this building was definitely in place by 1898. The owner was Sostenes Sepúlveda, eldest child of the large family of Juan Maria de Jesus Sepúlveda. Sostenes bought the land from a cousin for $300. The building is known by its street address to avoid confusion with the better known Sepúlveda House, built in 1887. It had three periods, first used by Chinese tenants, then by Italians and finally once again by Chinese residents.

Little is known about Sostenes Sepúlveda. Born in 1851, he married María Rico and, after her death, he married Asención Rico, her niece. This building was Sostenes' major real estate venture although at his death in 1924, it was mortgaged heavily. Following his death the building passed through a succession of owners until the State of California purchased it in 1954. .
